I've had it happen to me in Makati, Philippines where the girls would be knocking on your door and calling during all hours. It was quite a while ago, but I'd imagine over a 3-4 night stay, I only had 4-5 calls or knocks on the door.

I also had it happen in Qingdao, China where the girls would knock on your door, generally a few minutes after you arrived in your room.

Since it wasn't persistent, I just laughed it off as part of the culture.
