Before I hit FO status, I had DL AmEx Gold only. I always got 1st bag free without having to purchase the flight on that card and award didn't matter. If your DL.com profile shows DL AmEx Gold in your profile, it hasn't mattered if I've checked in online, kiosk, in person, or on my phone. If it's not showing up on your DL.com profile, you might want to call and sort that out before your flight. If you just opened the card, it takes about a week to update from what I've heard.
