Unless of course BD has a status level known as plat, and they won't comp to that highest level, in which case it's not a reference to a *P level at all.

Isn't the UA example exactly you refere to what it is saying.
i.e. if I choose to comp my status to UA I even if I have a "platinum" level in my current plan I will only get the * gold level i.e. Prem Exec.
