CDG 1K, interesting option to upgrade to F. Does TG offer that automatically on every flight (if extra F seats open), or do you kind-a have to ask/beg them for it?</font>
In every instance that I've requested an upgrade, I was able to so its within their policy. Even on a free ticket! The price depends on the distance eg. HKG-BKK: $150, BKK-Europe: $600.
Another interesting option but only cost effective when you get a real cheapo ticket is a double upgrade for double the price of the one class upgrade. Due to TG's C class seat comfort, I couldn't advise one to pay $600 for those seats but if you are upgrading into first, then its definitely worth it, especially with some of the bed configurations- flat beds with only 3 rows in the nose of the 747 and only 14 seats total with 4 FAs to look after you. BTW, you can identify the planes that have beds on the TG website or amadeus by looking for planes that are labeled 747. Flights using 744 equipement are not outfitted with beds to my knowledge. Both planes are still the 747-400 variety of course.
