Possible to request domestic miles seats?

About a month ago, I booked reward seats in First to India in October. When I booked there were no miles seats from NCL to LHR but we did manage to get them on the way back and I knew I would have just have to purchase domestic tickets on the outbound. However I have just called BA to request a date change on the return (greyed out in MMB) and asked if any domestic miles seats had come available for the outbound. The chap I spoke to said there were not, but he could request them and was puzzled as to why, when I made the initial booking, this had not been done.
I wasn't aware that you could request reward seats if none were available - is this possible because we are connecting to a flight in First or is it always an option?
