I don't know about UA/CO, but on US you only get 500 miles for AOO-JST-IAD. I saw it posted to an account last week.
As for things to do, I spent my childhood between JST and AOO. I would suggest trying to go during fall foliage season. There are nice country drives if you want to see leaves in color, which would be new for SoCal people. Going in winter - which starts about mid-November - is not recommended.
There are also some historical points, particularly from the 19th century - iron, steel, and so forth. The Johnstown Flood Memorial is an example.
