I'm Italian and I'm speaking for overall acceptance of CCs by the shops, without knowing the fees the companies make the customer pay.

I have to say that retailers, hotels, restaurants, etc. tend to prefer VISA or Mastercard and always accept them, mainly due to the cost involved with other cards (i.e. AmEx)
