how to book a direct flight as two separate segments? they always show up as one when I tried to book some flights...

FWIW, these flights are "direct" flights via ORD. If you are planning to fly on AA 810, be sure that you book it as TWO SEPARATE segments; otherwise, you will get only the point-to-point mileage instead of the true mileage for the segments you flew via ORD.
