Slightly off topic, but we met some people heading to the car rental facility in San Francisco with six obvious cases of wine on two luggage carts. Not sure how we started chatting with them, but had to ask why they would be arriving in San Francisco with that much wine instead of leaving.
Apparently they live in Texas and their son moved to San Fran to work in the wind industry. His cellar was something like 600 bottles, and they were bringing it to him three cases each every time they visited.
They took these things they called "silly trips" to get enough miles to keep their status to bring 3 x 70 lbs.
I told them about Flyertalk and mileage runs, they may be here now, they may have forgotten, but it is pretty amazing how much you can actually move over time just as checked luggage.
