I was on a CO DC-10 that was stranded in Pago-Pago (American Samoa) going LAX-SYD; they couldn't close the cargo door. The only hotel there had recently been destroyed by a Navy P-3 crashing into it, so there was no place to stay while CO ferried in a substitute plane (from HNL). The tarmac was littered with hundreds of cargo containers, which had been removed due to weight limitations on prior flights, and left stranded (some looked to have been there for months!). Quite memorable. This was circa 1980. I don't recall CO flying SFO-SYD, only LAX-SYD, but they might have.
