Fairmont Gold Lounge
I usually take my family to the Fairmont Chateau Whistler as a pre-Christmas season mini-vacation. We stay on the Gold floors and I enjoy using the Gold Lounge when I want to focus on some business while the wife and kids are gallavanting or resting.
The Gold Lounge offers free hot and cold snacks at various times of the day; you can even make a meal of it, and the snacks are pretty good fare. Soft drinks are free and alcohol is in the honour bar. The lounge is policed by the Gold floor concierges.
I was sitting in the lounge about two years ago zoning out over a cup of coffee and was idly watching the lounge door which is where the concierge-on-duty stands behind a desk. Like all good concierges the gal there learned the names of the Gold floor guests within a half day (amazing, really) and she'd greet each guest as they entered the lounge.
So a fellow in a nice suit approaches the lounge and the concierge looks up. "Good morning, sir. May I help you?"
"No, just going into the lounge."
"May I ask which room you're in?"
"[Room Number]"
"I don't believe that's correct sir. May I see your room key?"
"[mutters something probably rude]" - and the guy stomps away, disgruntled.
I can be a gregarious sort so I walked up to the concierge and complimented her on how she handled the poacher. She was very modest, and said that invasions of the Gold Lounge were thankfully fairly uncommon; also, the room number the man gave her was just down the hall where she knew an older couple were staying. "He needs to work on his story," she opined. :-)
