I dont think so. Trying to get compensation is more common in goverment departments in India but doubt that 9W will do that. I still think it is due to the hassle of sending it to you.
Do you have any contacts in bangalore? Try contacting the airline office and see if they agree to give the phone to your bangalore contact(if you give a letter/fax authorising them to collect it on your behalf).
