Negombo, as of my last visit in '09, was a relatively charmless beach resort catering to Europeans.

If you are interested in seeing something I'd suggest heading into Colombo which has interesting bits (unsure of whats restricted currently). If you'd like some exercise a swim at either the Galle Face or the Mt Lavinia hotel; for local food my choice is some random street vendor before noon.
