It takes a lot of concentration & helps if you're behind other cars so you can just follow them along. Most rental cars I've had in Ireland had arrows on the dashboard to remind you to stay left. Although I drive a stick shift at home I always get an automatic in Ireland just so I don't have to focus on shifting with my left hand plus trying to stay on the proper side of the road. I've never tried to drive within the city of Dublin itself, have heard it's a pain. We always waited to pick up the car until we were headed out to other parts of the country. Get the smallest car you can to fit your needs, some roads, especially in rural areas, are quite narrow & often have rock walls on either side. Which is no fun when you have to pass a tour bus. Roundabouts are big fun!
+1 on get the insurance. Despite my husband's opposition on our last trip I got it because I learned on a few trips with my parents that you're bound to get a ding or two along the way. Of course the first day on that trip I miss-judged a concrete pole in a parking lot so it paid for itself quickly. (see note about rock walls!) And potholes. Lots of potholes.
If you go out into the countryside remember one thing: sheep have the right of way. If not legally, they sure think they do.

Enjoy!
GREAT help! Thanks so much! Didn't think about just following the traffic. We're saying about 5 miles out of Dublin so we can just take the bus there. Free parking at hotel, but i've heard it's insane. I drive a manual transmission too and the thought of using the left hand scares me! Thanks everyone!
