(I was on a return leg home; I had not been made aware of this policy on my outgoing trip.)
I literally begged the check in agent and then the manager to let me take my stroller on as there was simply now way I could have managed the three children plus the bags (we had a long layover in a large airport) without it.
Just imagine trying to get through an airport and all the logistics involved with three small children and no way to restrain them, and to have to carry them with bags, etc.?
Eventually they let me take the stroller, in part I think because a woman with a large stroller had during the time I was at the counter, checked in with her large Graco car seat + stroller combo and the check in agent had said nothing to her and she had proceeded to the gate with it.
I will not be able to travel on American if they maintain this policy.
There is a twin mom thread on this topic at babycenter.com.
And yes, it does feel like discrimination.
In this instance you could have gotten two umbrella style strollers. I have (granted its Canada buyt the USA has more selection) seen umbrella strollers for twins (much like a double wide trailer).
The Graco likely folds down and can fit within the linear dimensions and weight requirements for AA purposes.
The only surprise was that the policy was implemented with no notice. I think you should be entitled to use the now too large stroller just for your return trip.
Just a question, but is there a reason (other than lack of notification) why two umbrella strollers would not be an acceptable option?
