I use my SPG Amex card for everything in order to get points for free hotel stays (less concerned about SPG status when I do redeem for hotel stays). I keep bumping against more and more establishments that accept all ccs except AMEX due to the interchange fee! I keep a HHilton rewards Visa for those times, but it's so annoying because I end up thinking something like "that's 118 points I've lost" at least 3x/week.
I haven't had this problem recently, but the few times when I unexpectedly run into it I make it clear to the merchant that my business will be going elsewhere next time. Some shrug, some have a canned answer about interchange fees. I have no sympathy either way.
