From the FAQ here, it seems to me QF is right. This is the closest I can find in relation to this topic.



The OW web site says I have 12 months to complete my trip, which I take as 12 months from the first flight.

I've also asked my original agent to clarify...
The actual fare rule states:
7. MAXIMUM STAY
Return travel from the last stopover point must commence no later than 12 months after departure.
And so the QF agent is correct (and the AA agent incorrect)
Just ring AA again and if necessary quote the rule
QF can in fact change an AA-issued ticket (they did it for my LONE4 a couple of years ago) - but you will be charged the QF service fee (IIRC AUD60 per person)
