Unhappy So long, AA Platinum

I first hit AA Platinum 5-6 years ago when working in Dallas. Soon after, I moved to New York, and maintained Platinum while based there. I even managed to keep it up the past two years while getting my MBA in Philadelphia, despite that not being an AA hub. I did a good amount of international travel for fun and for school, and would often leave from JFK if PHL had no AA options to the destination.

But I've now taken a new job in central Connecticut, and my new company does not include American as a preferred airline! It's United or Delta
Given I don't have any vacation the rest of the year and two weeks per year after, plus limited flight options from BDL (Hartford), I'm afraid I won't be able to maintain platinum with leisure travel. I'm at 29,000 miles for the year, and 905,000 lifetime, so hopefully I can reach lifetime gold at least pretty soon.

Any suggestions?
I'm thinking I'll go with United given Star Alliance's global coverage is better, particularly in countries I frequently visit such as Spain and Brazil.
