With the changes coming to Aeroplan next year (day after tomorrow!), I wonder whether you could have qualified for Elite on AC and had enough miles for something decent on LH (obviously not on UA).

I suppose SuperElite will always be better than Elite, no matter how much the program is watered down overall, but the other side is whether a different alliance is more appropriate for travel outside Canada.
