The old part of Hildesheim was destroyed during WWII, and it was decided to build a modern city rather than rebuild what had been destroyed. There was a change of heart in the 1980s, and a lot of the post-war buildings were demolished and replaced by replicas of what had been there before.
It all looks quite nice, though!

Yes, the replica part was pointed out to me by business partners living and working in Hildesheim. They were actually involved in that project.
I find many German smaller cities lovely, but the "new old" part of Hildesheim is really, really beautiful in some parts. Also worth stopping if taking a train westwards from Berlin.
