By compensation, I mean what comes in addition to the reimbursement of expenses you had in link with your delayed bag (e.g. miles, money). If you look also at FB Amex insurances, paid and award flights are treated the same way.

in fact, I just found "hard evidences" in the EU regulation 261/2004, article 3 - §3. in French : "le présent règlement ne s'applique pas aux passagers qui voyagent gratuitement ou à un tarif réduit non directemnt ou indirectement accessible au public.
Toutefois, il s'applique aux passagers en possession d'un billet émis par un transporteur aérien ou un organiseur de voyages dans le cadre d'un programme de fidélisation ou d'autres programmes commerciaux."
