The Thai status you are talking about is not *Gold, but *Silver, which wouldn't be worth anything to you (imo).

The best way to get around the missed bonus miles, is to start off with LH status (SEN *G) and then have UA comp you 1P. I did it this way, and thus never missed out on any status bonus miles, and have since requalified....
