Some examples (you find more in the Comparison Chart).
Star Awards using miles from:
AC - 1 stopover, can not buy more
NH - 4 stopovers, can not buy more
NZ - 1 stopover, can buy 2 more using miles
SQ - 1 stopover, can buy more using miles
TG - 2 stopovers, can not buy more
There are some restrictions, like travel between zones required or no stopover in zone of origin, but I think it's clear that the rules are not identical.
