I appreciate folks that have chimed in with their thoughts. I'm glad to have clarity (thanks Flying Lawyer!) regarding what the actual contract is on a prepaid reservation. You concurred with what I believed to be the case.

I do understand the logic behind not moving a guest better too, it totally makes sense that a deeper cleaning is necessary and of course that costs the hotel time and money. Thanks, gemac.

wilp888, I respect your opinion. I do still believe though that since this was clearly a prepaid reservation made for a smoking room that the hotel has an obligation to meet their end of the bargain and provide a smoking room. It's the prepaid part of things that make me so firm in my mindset on this. We've had stays with traditional reservations and we've reserved a smoking room and found that there wasn't one, and yes it's a little disappointing, but we could have likely canceled the reservation and walked ourselves if we desired. With the prepaid reservation, it feels to me like 'we've already got this guy's money, we'll just stick him wherever tonight'.
