The misconception is that you feel they have to provide a certain type of room (non smoking) but Hilton feels they just have to provide a room.

Prepaid or not, status or not, sometimes this is just how it is.

Unless your reservation said that room type was guaranteed, I don't think you have a chance of getting anything from them.

Sorry, but this is missleading. The "preferences" are the preferences stored in your profile. These are of course not part of the contract with the individual hotel but - literally - preferences. The "room type" you book (unless you book run of the house) is part of the contract and it is binding on the property.
