Hi. I am a former TSA screener. I can assure you that you can request a private screening for your coins.
They will insist that you put the bags in the x-ray and then they WILL call a bag check. Coins in large numbers are difficult to see through. At that point ask the TSA officer for a private screening. He HAS to comply. They may ask you the total amount you are carrying. If it is over $10,000 they may take some personal information from you such as you name and flight number.
