I generally qualify on points, flying internationally in full-fare business. But when I fly personally, I choose AA, trying to get the cheapest fare possible, but still willing to pay more to fly AA versus other options, in order to take advantage of my free upgrades. AA would lose all my personal business and perhaps even my business travel if I never got domestic upgrades or the offering were less competitive
