Fwiw, duty free prices at YVR, SYD and on-board AC are on the high side (as much as double the LAX price, for example -- and LAX isn't the cheapest in the US by any measure), so not sure it matters that much. SYD duty free is typically 30% less than the street price in Australia, so on a bottle of normal spirits you save $10 ... not sure it matters. SYD high-end booze prices are pretty bad but YVR might be worse.
