I sent Amex a SM and very nicely asking to be switched to this promotion and explained how I had moved all of my spending to this card, etc. I got a response back that this was a targeted promotion. I am waiting a response from my reply which was how can it be targeted when you got to SPG.com and it is the first thing that pops up.

At least give me a real reason like the promotion is only for new card holders. I am very disappointed in Amex's response which I let them know. I am not necessarily surprised that I won't be getting the points but very bad customer service.
