After talking to several people at Starwood (facilitated by Starwood Lurker), I have found alternate accommodation for my stay, but must say I am still disappointed at how this was handled. While the Starwood folks have been uniformly polite and sympathetic, they do not appear empowered to provide rooms at non-Starwood properties for displaced guests. While I can understand the reasoning, it turns what was a 30K point expense (I used a Nights & Flights award) into a $1500+ cash outlay. Personally, I think Starwood should absorb the cost of booking us elsewhere as part of their decision to close up shop, but clearly they do not agree. Takes some of the shine off the Starwood name for me, but it had to happen sometime...
