I find in my travels that the locals reflect whatever attitude the tourist has -- if you're nice they are too. If you're a jerk then they can be as well. Granted, I'm a boring little white guy (as FlyBalletGuy and others can attest) and I've never traveled anywhere where that might be an issue. I have no idea if there are cultural assumptions based on color between the Moroccan/African immigrants and the native Spaniards, but I guess most of that would disappear when you're identified as an American. I think the harder challenge for many Americans when traveling to Spain (and Argentina, Chile, etc.) is the timing difference. I love it because it's much more of my time, but for many people it's really hard to think of starting dinner at 10pm or later.

Others can speak to local LGBT culture...I'm not as familiar or involved with those places and activities compared to others here that can give much better feedback.
