Using AMEX overseas (in Europe)

I'm heading over to Europe (UK and Schengen) for an extended (9 months to a year vacation). I currently have a Zync and a Gold card with Amex and have been a member since '01. (not that that matters)

I was wondering if there was a different card I should apply for or a way to get around foreign transaction fees while I'm there. I want to use my card, but the fees will really rack up to the point where using the card would be prohibitive.

Should I apply for a centurion card? not sure if they have a foreign fee when outside the UK.

Does the platinum have no transaction fee built in? Not sure if the $400 a year would outweigh the foreign fees.

Thanks!
