I don't know the answer to your question. But I will point out in this now merged thread (like I did in the thread which it was merged with - my message is probably 20 pages back) - that opening a brokerage account isn't anything like taking out a new credit card. There are significant legal implications when money is in individual as opposed to joint accounts (and vice versa). E.g., in the event of divorce - death - a liability claim - decisions to put money into individual retirement accounts. Etc. Etc. If we were talking about moving just a few thousand dollars - I wouldn't be concerned. But people are moving tens and sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars here just to get points/miles. Heck - I've been married for almost 40 years - and would never think of moving money into a new individual account just to get points/miles. Might screw up a part of our financial and estate planning. OTOH - some people might screw things up moving money from individual to joint accounts.

Also note. If either spouse isn't a US citizen - there may be significant gift tax implications moving money between accounts.

IOW - know/learn the legal implications before you leap. Both in terms of federal and state laws (the latter vary a lot from state to state). Robyn, Esq.
