It sounds like what you were given was a Visa or MasterCard branded gift card, which are generally labelled as "debit" on the actual card. Nowadays many of these types of cards don't have maintenance fees but there are still a few unscrupulous companies that issue them that do. You could always try talking to their customer service people but I doubt it would do much good. Good luck!
