Moscow is the most civilized, despite also being the most crowded I've ever seen. A rush hour train is packed, and I don't mean NYC crowded. I mean you literally couldn't scratch your own nose. The rush-hour subway in Tokyo is nothing compared to Moscow.

Between stations, everyone rearranges themselves so that those about to exit are closest to the door. Anyone desiring to get off at the next station will ask people closer to the door "Are you exiting?" If you're not about to exit, you step back and further into the train.

Nobody holds the doors (they'd probably slam down on your hand, anyway) or tries to dash into a car after the door chime. If it's too crowded to board a train, people will wait for the next. But luckily the next train is probably only about 40 seconds away.... the beauty of Communist infrastructure.
