In Chicago, when the El pulls into a station, people on the platform stand to the sides of the doors and wait for people to get off the train before getting on. This is also the behavior I've noticed just about everywhere else that I've taken a train.

In New York, I've noticed since moving here that people sort of stand to the sides on the platform, but frequently start getting on the train from the sides of the doors while people are still trying to get off. It's very annoying. The other day some annoying lady wouldn't get out of my way as I was getting off the train, so I kind of accidentally-on-purpose ran my shoulder into her as I was getting off the train.

New Yorkers are perhaps as rude as their reputation...and I'm apparently becoming one. What's up with this?
