You do bring up a good point, but that's where accepting responsibility of the consequences comes in. I had the misfortune of understanding the C.Y.A. attitude of most large enterprises and promptly dismissed it in cases like these. IMO, if C.Y.A was on my mind at the moment, I wouldnt have stayed in that job very long.
