I didn't spend the night in my first airport until is was 23- and then it was only 1 night, not 3 days.
I've had United bend the rules for me on occasion, so I know it can be done, but then I am a good customer and have been for a really long time. I dread to think what it would be like dealing with them and not having any status.
Lucky! My first overnight in an airport was when I was 16. A weather IRROPS caused me to get kicked off the last flight to BMI and the gate agent booked me a trip to DCA with no way to get to BMI (besides a limo ... LOL). It was for a job and my agency said they could reimburse me, but I had no credit-card at the time.
I stayed awake the entire time (was keeping a watch on my luggage) but thought it was kinda cool to watch the airport operations at night.
Nevertheless, I don't think it should be that traumatizing for the child. It also gave me a learning experience about WX and IRROPS situations too
