It is my understanding, when in a connecting airport, formal UMs are under the watch of airport / airline personnel. There is still no possibility of hotel accommodations but an adult would have been available to perhaps help with re-booking alternatives or at a minimum providing a safe place. That at least is my understand of the service at SFO.
