This sounds weird and most likely explanation is that two or more suitcases, one being yours, got dumped on the ground somewhere along the way and that the carrier tried to put the bags back together as they were, but you got someone else's stuff.

The food issue makes it possible that a random agricultural inspection (trained dog) somewhere along the route, perhaps at your intl. destination, picked up the food and your bag was inspected.
