I thought that the case too, but when I returned our rental car in Jersey City a month ago, I pumped my own gas! There was no attendant in sight.
As for the OP, I have also heard elsewhere that foreign cards should accept any 5 digits when prompted for the zip code - 00000, 99999, and 90210 seem to be the most popular choices.
I've never tried entering an incorrect zip code before...perhaps I shall next time. I'm curious if it will actually deny the purchase. My BF's house got broken into a few months ago, and they stole his corporate AmEx. They used it to buy gas at a few area gas stations before we cancelled it, and I"m pretty sure they didn't know his zip code.
