The UA board and specifically the 1Ks are at the moment in headless-chicken-mode similar to the DL/NW board during the merger.
As a free match CO plat, I started off quite well from IAD. If you are anywhere near EWR, you are better off staying with CO/UA and doing the 1k challenge than working your way up by flying. The CR-1s will help as well with upgrades to as far away as HI and they are transferable. The SWUs are like DL, only on W+ fares, but they are also transferable and that makes a huge difference if you need more.
As for vasantn's idea, if you are going AA I do not think EWR is the place to live near.
