How many times had you actually stayed at this hotel though?
Their not just using a card on file was perfectly correct of them since you were present. They would not have had much comeback if a charge was disputed if they hadn't seen the card itself
Where it was only a cash booking and they were going to refund the deposit before you left , they would have been on the hook for any damages or even mini bar charges ( if the hotel had one )
