Once you and your cash deposit leave the hotel they would be hard pressed to collect for damages and/or prove it was you who did the damage, so a timely inspection and prompt deposit refund is not so very offensive, but could have been handled a little more delicately, like informing you that they would accept a cash deposit for the stay and would just do a simple check of the room before your refund in the AM, so it wouldn't be a surprise. But it makes sense - if it was a security deposit, they would need to check the room before you leave since you didn't authourize a credit card to charge for incidentals or damages. I probably wouldn't have expected it either, but I guess it should have been expected.
