This is what I was on when we were in ZRH...

essentially the 2-carrier awards are strictly on the services of the carriers. If the rules/cities work for you they're cheaper than the mileage based fares.

Granted it was 2 years ago that I inquired...the recent Consumers Reports Travel Letter said they were still available on TWA and about 8 other airlines, so maybe they're not any more for UA.

You might look on the ANA website--someone said there was info there regarding them.


anyway, as long as you're on UA and SK metal, you can do something like

IAD-LHR (UA)
LHR-OSL-CPH-DEL/BKK/SIN/KIX/NRT/PEK (SK)
Asia-USA (UA)

obviously you can mix and match connection cities, and have open jaws. Fare beats (biz at US$3700) most consolidators west-coast-Europe and matches midwest-Europe consolidated fares in biz.
