You mean Google did not post a disclaimer saying that things might take longer in the event of "fire department activity" or other emergency action? Sounds like you should sue Google.
Next time, show up at the AA ticket counter, and explain what happened. You
might have gotten a different result.
Google said it would take 1:20. I gave it 1:45. It took about 2:40. Read my post. This is nothing to do with Google.
I did show up at the ticket counter afterwards - I got back on the accursed Airtrain at T4 to go back to the subway and found myself at T8. By then, of course, the train was moving speedily.
I got off at T8 to see if showing up in person might help. This was at about 5:50. I went to the First/Biz checkin counter. The lady there said the 7:30 flight was "completely full" and nothing was available for tomorrow.
I should have had the presence of mind to ask her to put me on the standby list for the 7:30 flight anyway, but by then I felt wilted and wasn't really thinking.
According to aa.com, tonight's 5:59 PM departure from JFK to SFO did not depart until 6:21 PM. That of course does not tell us when they "closed" the flight, or if they had already given your seat away. But if I had already printed my boarding pass and had only carry-on luggage, I probably would have tried to go to the departure gate. Even if you missed the flight, you could then go to the Admirals Club with your Business Class trans-continental boarding pass, and see if they could do anything for you. At the very least, they might have let you re-schedule for another date in the future, so that you did not have to incur the $175 mileage re-deposit fee.
Your chances of getting out tonight might very well have been slim; but once you left the airport, they were zero. By the way, were you willing to overnight in LAX, if need be?
I'm sure that I would have been just as upset as you are if this had happened to me, and if this had been a
scheduled AirTrain outage, I'd be angry at the PA too. But it sounds like they acted appropriately when faced with an unexpected emergency situation, although perhaps not as quickly as you would have liked. (There could just as easily have been a track fire or other emergency on the PATH system which might have delayed you at the Jersey City end.)
I agree with
Blumie that your chances of recouping your $175 from the PA are zero; your chances of recouping your $5.00 AirTrain fare are slightly -- but only slightly -- greater.
And for future reference, from Terminal 4, you can take the Q-10 or Q-10 Limited bus to Lefferts and Liberty, and catch the A train there, avoiding the $5.00 AirTrain fare entirely.
