Air train I always avoid Howard Beach
I take the Long Island Rail Road to Jamaica Station (15 minutes) and Catch the Airtrain there. Much faster and much more reliable. Plus in a pinch you could always grab a gypsy cab for a short ride to the airport. I'm never had to resort to that but it is an option.
