The inter-terminal AirTrain wasn't running? Even during regular ops, it's usually faster to get off at T1 and take the inter-terminal train one stop to T8 (it runs in the opposite direction).
I never saw one come from across the platform, and I'm not sure if they were running. They had mentioned "single track" operation. Though it didn't even occur to me until you just posted it here. This was my first time on the Airtrain.
Rats! If it had been running and I'd known about it, I would have made my flight.
