In my experience it's a total hit or miss on any small storm or wind shaking things up but generally summer is pretty calm on my channel island trips. Assuming Check the wind conditions leading up to the trip... if it gets gusty the waves will chop.
Having a day as downtime between the return helps as you calm down any nerves but as it gets later in the day and cools off, the tides shift and water can pick up.
Boat size can help a lot too in bringing stability and increasing the size of the center of gravity although they also push into waves more than going over them.
