According to the "updates" listing on the App store, CNN live broadcasts require AT&T U-Verse, Comcast, Cox, Dish or Suddenlink. Which should cover most cablecos in the US and Canada, I think.

You should be able to hook an I-device to an HD TV with the Apple Digital AV Adapter. I have one, but haven't actually used it yet so can't comment on the effectiveness.
